What is Neurogenic Claudication?
Neurogenic Claudication is a symptom that describes the sensation of pain down the legs, specifically occurring when standing and/or walking. It is typically indicative of a condition known as spinal stenosis (described below). The nerve roots that provided motor and sensory input to the legs run through the spinal canal, a central channel that runs from the bottom of the brain all the way to the tailbone.
What Causes Neurogenic Claudication?
When the canal is narrowed or obstructed for any reason, the nerve become crowded and compressed. While at rest (sitting or lying), pain is not an issue. It is mainly when active, on your feet or walking, that neurogenic claudication becomes apparent. Oftentimes, the patient can communicate the exact distance at which they began to feel symptoms. On that same note, they will express that pain goes away while sitting. If you feel that neurogenic claudication may be the cause of your pain contact Austin Spine Health to schedule an appointment.
